It seems like every day, there's another random national holiday to celebrate, and today is no exception. In addition to it being National Pug Day (probably the cutest holiday of all time), today is Sweetest Day, a holiday that was apparently started in 1922, but I'm only just hearing about now. Sweetest Day is basically a holiday about celebrating love and loved ones, but it's a little different than Valentine's Day. If you're wondering how to celebrate Sweetest Day, I'm here to give you some ideas.
But first, what is Sweetest Day? Legend has it that Sweetest Day was started in Cleveland, Ohio, by a candy company employee who wanted to brighten the days of people around him who needed some extra love. He gave out little gifts to orphans, people confined to their homes, and others in need to show them someone cared. From there, it grew over the years into a holiday for celebrating your friends, family, and loved ones. Sweetest Day is always celebrated on the third October of the month, and this year, it falls on Oct. 15. It's a pretty big deal in the Midwest, but now people from around the country are taking note. So, here are some ways to celebrate.
The obvious choice for celebrating Sweetest Day is to give your loved ones candy — it's how the holiday started, after all. Plus, given that Halloween is later this month, all the stores have the best candy stocked. It's a win-win!
Obviously, you're not limited to just one type of sweet item. You can really go crazy. Might I recommend a celebratory Sweetest Day cookiedilla?
Yes, Hallmark makes Sweetest Day cards. Though a homemade one would be just as sweet.
You don't have to spend money on this fairly obscure holiday. Just doing something nice for someone goes a long way and still captures the spirit of Sweetest Day.
Yeah, yeah, it's cheesy, but you probably don't do it enough. When was the last time you told your friend, your mom, your roommate — whomever — how much you value them? People love to know they're appreciated, and today is a great day to do it. Spread the love, y'all.
