London weather: Coldest night for 12 years recorded as temperatures drop to -8.4C making UK capital

London experienced its coldest night in 12 years on Sunday night (January 22) as temperatures dropped to as low as -8.4C in some parts.

Heathrow saw temperatures plummet to -8.4C, the coldest temperature recorded in the area since December 2010, according to one weather expert.

Meteorologist Laura Tobin, in the early hours of Monday (January 23) tweeted: “Heathrow’s temperature plunged to -8.4C Which is the coldest night for Heathrow since December 2010.”

It comes as around 80 flights from Heathrow were cancelled overnight due to the freezing and foggy conditions at the airport.

Temperatures in the area were still as low as -7C at 8am on Monday, while -8C was recorded in Northolt at dawn.

The sub-zero temperatures last night meant that London was actually colder than Moscow, which recorded lows of -4C, and Winnipeg, which was -3C.

Fog in parts of London has also affected road travel, with visibility in Surbiton, South London, being reduced to just 100 yards.

Temperatures in London on Monday are expected to peak at around 5C as the sun comes out, although the south of the country is still unusually colder than the north, where places in Scotland will see temperatures of around 10C.

The weather for southern England is forecast to remain below average for the remainder of the week, although largely dry except on Wednesday when there is a chance of some rainfall.
